Provably fair is a verification method, not a marketing badge. At a conventional online casino you take the operator's word — backed by a licence and a testing house report — that the random number generator behaves. At a provably fair game the casino publishes enough cryptographic material for you to check each individual round yourself, after the fact, on your own machine. The idea came out of early Bitcoin dice sites around 2012 and now covers dice, crash, plinko, mines, limbo and a growing set of in-house crypto titles. Step by Step, One Round

Mechanically the scheme rests on a commitment. Before you bet, the server generates a random server seed and shows you only its SHA-256 hash — a fixed-length fingerprint that cannot be reversed into the seed, but can be recomputed from it later. That hash is the commitment: the outcome is now locked. You then supply or accept a client seed, and the game attaches a nonce that increments with every round. The three values are combined, usually through HMAC-SHA256, and the resulting hex string is converted into a game outcome by a documented rule — the first four bytes read as a number, that number mapped onto a 0.00 to 99.99 range for dice, or onto a deck ordering for cards. When you rotate your seed, the server reveals the old server seed. You hash it, compare the result against the commitment you were shown before betting, then rerun the HMAC for any nonce you played and check that the outcome matches what you saw on screen. If either check fails, the casino altered something.

What It Proves and What It Does Not

What that chain proves is narrow, and worth stating precisely: the result of your round was fixed before you placed the bet and was not altered afterwards. The casino could not watch a $200 stake land and quietly nudge the roll. What it proves nothing about is the house edge, which lives in the payout table in plain sight. A dice bet with a 49.5 percent win chance paying 2x returns $0.99 for every $1 staked. Bet $1 a round for 10,000 rounds and you have staked $10,000 against an expected return of $9,900 — an expected loss of $100, with every single seed rotation verifying perfectly. Fair Maths, Unlicensed Operator

Provable fairness is also no substitute for a licence, and this is where a lot of crypto lobbies quietly fail. The cryptography can be airtight while the operator still voids a withdrawal under a vague terms clause, sits on a payout for three weeks, or closes without notice. Hashing verifies rounds; it does not verify solvency, complaint handling, or whether anyone answers when a $3,000 cashout stalls. A Curacao or Anjouan licence is a low bar, but it is a bar, and it gives you somewhere to escalate.
